Watauga Lake

Crystal-clear water surrounded by Appalachian peaks? Yes, please.

Watauga Lake is consistently ranked among the most beautiful lakes in the Southeast. Spend the afternoon boating, kayaking, fishing, or simply relaxing along the shoreline. In the fall, the foliage reflecting on the water is picture-perfect.

It’s peaceful. It’s scenic. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down.

Step into a story you won’t hear anywhere else.

Old Butler was once a thriving town — until it was relocated to make way for Watauga Dam in the 1940s. The Museum of Butler preserves the photographs, artifacts, and personal stories of a town that refused to be forgotten. If you want to understand the heart of this community, start here.

Season opens on Saturday, May 23, 2026

Backbone Rock

Known as “The Shortest Tunnel in the World,” Backbone Rock is one of our most iconic natural landmarks.

Drive through the rock tunnel, located in Johnson County, then take the short hike up for incredible views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a quick stop — but one you’ll definitely remember.

Right in the heart of downtown Mountain City, this

beautifully restored historic building showcases regional artists and rotating exhibits.

It’s a reminder that creativity runs deep in these mountains. Stop in, meet local artists, and take home something uniquely Appalachian.

Looking for a relaxing afternoon?

Villa Nove pairs mountain views with locally crafted wines and live music events throughout the season. Bring friends, enjoy a tasting, and soak in the peaceful countryside setting.

It’s the perfect place to wind down after a day of exploring.

Copperhead Road Landmark – Butler
